In
1862, John Morgan and W.S.Baines established an estate agency business
opposite Sutton station.
Later they were joined by Harold Copley-Clark and as the business
grew, the company took the name Morgan Baines and Clark. The name
became well known in the area and in 1880 a second office opened
in Manor Road, Wallington.
By 1907 handsome new offices were designed and built at 5 Woodcote
Road, Wallington to house the evergrowing company requirements.
These offices later became the "Whispering Moon" public
house. Around this time Claude Frost joined the partnership and
when the First World War broke out he was called to serve his country.
However, the business still continued with the help of his sister.
In the post war period the neighbourhood expanded rapidly and the
increase in business forced another move to 49 Woodcote Road, Wallington.
At this time a professional department was founded and made responsible
for surveys, development and management of estates and property
in the district.
Two more offices were subsequently opened at Purley and Carshalton.
The Second World War interrupted further development of the company.
However, by concentrating on requisitions and bomb damage claims
the Company ensured its survival whilst staff fitted in Home Guard
duties!
In 1940 furniture auction rooms were opened at 43 Woodcote Road,
Wallington. In 1949 John and Bruce Frost achieved professional status
as members of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the
Institute of Auctioneers. They then joined their father Claude Frost
at Morgan Baines and Clark.
The office at 49 Woodcote Road, was sold in 1955 and became part
of the existing Wallington shopping precinct and the business moved
to 43 Woodcote Road where a current residential office is located
today. Over the following five years, two old established firms
of estate agents operating in Dorking, Guildford, Godalming and
Sutton were acquired and the company changed its name to Morgan
Baines and Frost.
In 1976, John Frost was joined by his eldest son David Frost who
had qualified as a Chartered Surveyor and today is the Professional
Services Director. Andrew Clark, our Commercial Director, joined
the company in 1978 after gaining considerable experience as a Chartered
Surveyor in the Borough Valuers Office and has been responsible
for the growth of the Commercial Department.
Over the next two decades residential sales offices were opened
in Banstead, Chipstead, South Croydon, Stonecot Hill and Tadworth
in order to give a better service to the growing client base.
In 1991 the partnership was incorporated into a limited company
and John D Frost retired.
